Hip hop didn't start on stage. It started in the Bronx, with two record players and one idea.

On August 11, 1973, Clive Campbell, better known as DJ Kool Herc, pioneered a technique that became the foundation of hip hop—and for which he is known today as the ‘father of hip hop.’.

It all started with a back-to-school party that my sister Cindy threw in the community hall of their apartment building at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue. Admission was 25 cents for girls and 50 cents for boys.

Two turntables, two copies of the same record, and a technique that would extend the song’s brief, most energetic section (‘break’) indefinitely. That’s how breakbeat was born.

Herc and his father put together a powerful sound system known as the ‘Herculoids’—tower-sized speakers that were enough to fill the entire hall. Flyers announced every new party on the streets.

Without Kool Herc's techniques, there would be no DJing, no sampling, and none of what we call hip-hop culture today.

Our current selection is played on the very same Technics turntable that Herc used. Along with it, we offer a curated collection spanning the entire history of the genre, as well as books that tell the story of how that history continues.

Before streaming, mixtapes were everything. ‘Do Remember!’ tells the story of that era, and our boombox reminds us of how music used to sound on the streets.

Hip hop has never been limited to music; it has permeated fashion, skate culture, and sneaker aesthetics, which are still alive today.

Hip hop originated in the early 1970s in the Bronx, New York, as a street culture that brought together DJs, MCs (rappers), breakdancing, and graffiti art. Over the course of five decades, it has become one of the most influential forces in music and culture worldwide.

Wu-Tang Clan, *Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)*
A 1993 debut album that introduced the nine-member group and its distinctive, kung fu-inspired aesthetic. One of the most influential East Coast hip-hop albums.

A Tribe Called Quest, Midnight Marauders
A 1993 album that combined jazz sampling with a softer, more intellectual sound. Part of the ‘Native Tongues’ movement, which offered an alternative to the more aggressive sound of the time.

KRS-One, Return of the Boom Bap
A 1993 solo album by KRS-One, released a year after his collaboration with Boogie Down Productions. It is considered one of the best examples of the ‘boom bap’ era—featuring heavy beats and sharp lyrics.

Lauryn Hill, *The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill*
A 1998 album that blended hip hop, soul, and R&B. It won five Grammys and became a benchmark for women in the genre.

Wu-Tang Clan, Legend of the Wu-Tang: Greatest Hits
The Wu-Tang Clan is a collective of nine MCs who created a distinctive sound and philosophy that influenced the entire East Coast scene. This compilation brings together their most notable tracks—from ‘C.R.E.A.M.’ to their later hits—all in one place.
