Is it worth buying a used record player?
By Phono Shop
A used record player can be either a great investment or a headache—it all depends on what you check before buying. And is it worth buying a used record player?
When Is a Used Record Player a Good Idea?
Older Technics or Dual models are often more solidly built than today’s budget entry-level models—with a metal chassis, a heavy base, and a more reliable motor. If the model has been well-maintained, it can last another decade.
Buying used is also a good option if you want to move up to a higher-end model (such as Rega or Pro-Ject) without paying the full price of a new one.
What You Need to Check
Before buying, ask the salesperson to play the record—listen for any constant humming, fluctuations in speed, or strange crackling that isn't caused by the record itself.
- – Condition of the needle – it’s usually best to replace it right away, no matter what the salesperson says
- – Belt elasticity (in belt-drive models) – a dried-out belt causes speed fluctuations
- – The balance of the tonearm and whether it moves evenly across the entire record
- – Does it come with a phono preamp, or will I need to buy one separately?

When is the best time to buy a new one?
If you're buying your first record player and don't want to get into technical inspections, a new model with a warranty (such as a Crosley or Audio-Technica) will be a safer choice. The appeal of the used market really shines through once you know what you’re looking for.
The charm of a used record player can also fade when you need to find a replacement needle for it. We receive quite a few inquiries from people looking for a needle for an old, used record player—one whose model has long since been discontinued. In such cases, the only options are to search for that model online and buy it secondhand, or to find someone willing to refurbish the old record player with new parts. We won’t deny it—for some, this is a fascinating and enjoyable activity, but for those who just want to listen to music, it can be a real headache.
