Eastern Blocks
Concrete Landscapes of the Former Eastern Bloc
Moscow's "sleeping districts", East Berlin's Plattenbauten, Warsaw's modernist quarters, Kiev's Brezhnevkiye - although they were home to the majority of the city's inhabitants, the post-war suburbs of central and eastern Europe have long remained largely invisible.
Zupagrafika's Eastern Blocks is a photographic journey through the cityscapes of the former Eastern Bloc. It invites you to explore the neighbourhoods and peripheries that became the site of mass housing construction after the Second World War, featuring objects such as Soviet "flying saucer" pavilions, "chicken-legged" houses or hammer-shaped towers.
The book covers modernist and brutalist architecture in Moscow, (East) Berlin, Warsaw, Budapest, Kiev and St Petersburg. It includes more than 100 photographs taken by Zupagrafika over the last decade, complemented by work by local photographers. The publication is divided into 6 chapters, with an introduction by Christopher Beanland, maps, an index of architects and informative texts on the cities and buildings featured.
